IFSI Partnership with China in Emergency Management

In Fall 2008, IFSI held the first Chinese Emergency Management Training Program for participants from Tianjin Emergency Response Office, Beijing Emergency Response Office, and Tsinghua University’s Center for Public Safety Research at IFSI. The program was well-received. In January 2010, visitors from the China Three Gorges Corporation, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Beijing Global Safety Technology Co. Ltd., and Tsinghua University’s Center for Public Safety Research participated in a Public Safety Emergency Training Program at IFSI. The delegation also visited the Illinois State Emergency Operations Center in Springfield.

In August 2009, in partnership with Illinois International (previously the University’s International Programs and Studies), IFSI helped organize and coordinate the University of Illinois Higher Education Administrative Training Program for Beihang University per the request of Vice President Xiaoqing Tang. The fifteen participants reported that they learned so much from 57 high-level university administrators, and visited Purdue University, the University of Chicago, and Stanford University.

In April 2009, thirteen members from the China Ropeway Association attended Rescue Management Training at IFSI, trained by Joe Gasparich, Bill Farnum, Leon Duncan, and Greg Fisher. The members also visited the Frankfort RTC and ropeway sites in other cities.

Since 2010, groups of small business managers have joined Emergency Management Response Training Program, which increased their skills to deal with disasters and emergencies in their field. The Department of Business Administration, College of Business, served as a partner and collaborator.

In October 2011, in partnership with Illinois International again, as requested by Director Jinxing Ma, Beihang’s Foreign Affairs Office, IFSI helped organize and coordinate the Workshop on “the Administrative and Management Structure Reform and Change with the Universities” including emergency management in universities and colleges. The fifteen participants from Beihang University joined the program.
